Puppy Kindergarten

Congratulations! You have (or are getting) a puppy! The Ottawa Canine School offers puppy training that covers key developmental periods.

Getting an early start on training pays off. The earlier a dog starts his or her education, the better he or she becomes at learning new things. What a wonderful opportunity you have to mould your new puppy into the confident, well-mannered adult dog you will be able to take (almost) anywhere.

Our Puppy Classes are built with you and your puppy in mind using science-based methods and inspired by the latest research on puppy training.

To learn more about the importance of proper socialization during the critical early puppyhood, please read the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s position statement.

BONUS: Participating in our Puppy Kindergarten classes gives you access to purchase spots in our exclusive Puppy Playdate!

“Proper socialization combined with positive reinforcement-based training in the context of a group puppy class helps puppies grow into well-adjusted pets.” – Dr. Brenda Griffin, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM

Puppy Kindergarten I / 9-13 weeks old

Puppy Kindergarten I is for puppies who are between 9 and 13 weeks old on the first day of class.

Puppy Kindergarten I focuses on relationship building and confidence building. Your puppy will learn that the world is a safe and happy place.

Basic exercises introduced in Puppy Kindergarten I include vet visits and grooming, socialization activities, alone-time training, and Puppy Manners 1. You will learn how to prepare your puppy to enjoy vet check-ups and love being groomed. You will also learn how to help your puppy love alone time. Your puppy will also gain confidence thanks to safe, positive interactions with strangers, novel items, other puppies, textures and strange sounds. Our Puppy Kindergarten I program includes plenty of off-leash playtimes, which is so beneficial for developing social skills and bite inhibition. Puppy basic obedience taught in this class will provide the foundation for good manners such as sit, attention towards the handler, polite leash walking, and more! Chewing, nipping, deciphering and interpreting body language, and how to properly reinforce good behaviours and deal with unwanted behaviours are a few of the topics you’ll learn in Puppy Kindergarten I.

Puppy Kindergarten II / 14-21 weeks old

Puppy Kindergarten II is for puppies who are between 14 and 21 weeks old on the first day of class.

Puppy Kindergarten II focuses on preparing your puppy for puppy adolescence while building a positive bond between you and your puppy.

Exercises introduced in Puppy Kindergarten II include impulse control, polite social skills, preventing common behavioural problems, and Puppy Manners 2. Your puppy will develop skills to help prepare him or her for adolescence such as learning to share prized possessions, coping with scary situations and mastering the art of good social skills with dogs and people. Adolescence can be a challenging time as puppies become more independent and behavioural quirks start to emerge. Therefore, you want to set your puppy up for success so that he or she will thrive during adolescence! Our Puppy Kindergarten II program includes off-leash playtime, during which the focus is positive socialization. Puppy basic obedience taught in this class will include mastering good manner skills in a higher level of distraction. Resource guarding, “selective hearing”, dog park safety and success, and fear periods are a few of the topics you’ll learn in Puppy Kindergarten II.

Vaccination Requirements: Your puppy must have had a second round of distemper combination vaccines, administered at least 7 days before your dog’s first class. The class assistant will verify the vaccination record in the first class.
