About the Facility

We are moving to our new facility. Doors will open January 3rd 2018 !

Address: 401 B St. Laurent Blvd, Ottawa, ON K1K 2Z8

Our training hall is approximately 2500 sqft of recycled tire flooring that offers a gentle, anti slip surface for our canine companions. This makes their experience much more safe and enjoyable, whether they are meeting new friends during a playdate, romping around during doggy daycare, working on their recall during class or enjoying one of the many classes we offer.  Other features of the facility include:

  • Air conditioned in summer, heated in winter
  • Large, fenced outdoor space
  • Use of on-site training equipment, tables and chairs permitted for rentals
  • Free On-site parking and free street parking
  • Adjacent to a lovely park, great for watching squirrels and sniffing trees

We appreciate your cooperation to help keep our classes small and effective for you.

  • Classes are not transferable nor exchangeable.
  • If your dog can no longer attend class due to health reasons, a note from your vet will be required for a refund.
  • There is a $20 administration fee to process all refunds.

Children are welcome to attend classes. Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Dog Handlers must be at least 14 years old unless a specific exception has been made.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What do I bring to class?
  • Reinforcements in the form of small and yummy treats, and your dog's favorite toy
  • Regular 6 foot leash (no zip leashes please)
  • Closed toe shoes
  • Indoor shoes if it's wet/muddy out
  • Optional: a blanket/bed for your dog to relax on  in between exercises
  • For Puppy Kindergarten I: PROOF that your dog has received its 1st round of vaccines at least 7 days before beginning classes
  • For Puppy Kindergarten II: PROOF that your dog has received its 2nd round of vaccines at least 3 days before beginning classes

All classes are done on a flat (regular) buckle collar, a martingale, a harness or a gentle leader.

Can I bring friends/family to class?

We welcome everyone who is part of your dog's daily life to attend classes so that the whole family is on the same page. Generally, we recommend there be one 'main handler' for when the dog is learning new behaviours, but everyone is welcome to attend if they are able to sit through a 60 minute class.

Note: dog handlers must be 14 years old, HOWEVER, we know that many children make excellent dog handlers. For that reason, we certainly allow some children to be handlers during the class. IF it is confusing for the dog, then we would recommend that the adult teach the dog the new lesson and the children have a chance to practice.

Can I / my dog visit the school before signing up for a class?

We welcome visits from our clients prior to beginning classes. If you are interested in what our classes and instructors are like and want to see a class in progress, we can arrange this with you. The only exception is our Reactive Rover class, due to the nature of the class.

If you are looking to give your dog the opportunity to see and experience our facility, we would recommend arranging a visit by email when there are no classes going on so that you and they can see the training hall.

Can I enrol two dogs in the same class?

Yes. This is not a problem. We require one adult handler per dog. Preferably, each dog will work with the same handler each week.

I may have to miss a class / I'm a shift worker. What are my options?

For Puppy Kindergarten: there is no need to worry! You have signed up for 6 sessions, so we will push back your graduation by one week. Remember, however, that dogs older than 20 weeks (PKI) / 28 weeks (PKII) will be too old for Puppy K.

For group classes, you have two options when you miss a class:

Speak to the instructor in advance, get the homework and continue practicing at home and do your best to catch up upon your return
Request a 30 minute makeup class for a cost of $20+tax at a time that is mutual convenient for you and your instructor. Email us to request this option.

My dog is going in to heat; can I still attend class?

For Basic Obedience and Reactive Rover, we ask that dogs in heat do not attend, since both of these groups of dogs may find it difficult to concentrate. For any other class, please contact us and we will make a recommendation on a case-by-case basis.

I am expecting a Puppy soon, how do I ensure I have a spot in Puppy Kindergarten in advance?

Our Puppy Kindergarten classes are START ANYTIME, so if you know what day you'll be getting your dog, you can sign up to start the following week. Simply choose the day of your preference (ie. Mondays at 6pm), then select which date you wish to begin (i.e June 6th). If circumstances change, it is easy to email us and shift your start date.

What Vaccines does my need?

1st round of DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus)

Rabies
Boosters for Leptospirosis as necessary
Boosters for Lyme disease as necessary
Optional: Bordatella if not already given

Dogs should have vaccines at least 10 days prior to start of classes to ensure integration into their immune system

We also accept titer test results in lieu of vaccination records.

My vet says I should wait until my puppy is fully vaccinated before socializing - what do I do?

"While veterinarians are appropriately concerned about infectious disease in young puppies, the fact is that behavioral issues—not infectious diseases—are the number one cause of death for dogs under 3 years of age, according to the AVSAB."  This statement comes directly from the American Veterinary Medical Association's website.

By the time puppies are fully vaccinated at 4 months of age, the crucial socialization window has already closed. Because of this, we refer to the AVMA's recommendation of starting puppy class as early as 8 to 9 weeks of age, provided the puppy has already received his first round of vaccinations.

We require proof of vaccination for all puppies coming in to class, and have our facility professionally cleaned twice weekly, as well as being spot cleaned daily by staff. Messes are cleaned up immediately using anti-microbial and anti-viral cleansers.

Because of this we feel that our facility is an appropriate environment for young puppies to begin their exposure to the world. Click here for the (American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior) AVSAB's position statement regarding early puppy socialization.

Do you give discounts if I sign up two dogs at once?

We have a frequent flyer program. Once you have participated in 5 classes, you are eligible for a lifetime discount of 15%. This 5 class count is for your whole household, so each dog you enrol in a class contributes to the count. Two dogs means you'll become a frequent flyer in no time!
